Our Darkest Hours The Eight Stories In This Collection Grapple With The Different Ways By Which Humans Handle Frustration They May Be Ugly, They May Be Ruthless, But They Remain Dark Mirrors Of The World That We Live In And Who Best To Show Us These Hidden And Darker Selves Than The Men And Women Who Have Nothing Left To Lose, Who Are Trapped In Their Darkest Hours, And Unable To Wait For The Coming Of The Dawn I m torn between giving this two or three stars because while the ideas concepts behind the stories were good enough, I m not sure I liked what I read tbh.Sakto lang, I guess Sana binili ko na lang yung bagong Zsazsa Zaturnnah.Typographical errors are there, the typesetting seems to forget what to do for enye and we get words like se ora instead Some sentences make me wonder what the hell is going on I guess I got the feeling of being a soldier right or wrong Wrong at the start because I doubt anyone who expected to die could go to battle confidently Right, because anyone who actually survives only feels relief. What does that mean I m also not a fan of stories that use the first person point of view It feels lazy to me and considering these stories are supposed to be noir whatever that means I feel like the first person pov could have been used to better effect If you have to tell it using I as the narrator, at least give me a reason why Also it doesn t really show off how much of a range the writer has in writing All the stories are in first person pov and I feel like having done so limits the writer and what he can do with perspective.Anyway, an overarching theme of the book seems to be people being people in their darkest hours Greed, selfishness, pride, and violence litter the book That s what I m here for and I m not condemning the stories for that But also I feel like there s a lot of condescending anger coming from these stories What do I mean Well, I mean years and years ago I wrote a bunch of short stories for my undergrad thesis at the same university the author took his masterals in All of those stories reflected a bleak and emo outlook about life in general and I cringe whenever I have to read them again Thank you my thesis advisers for not wanting to box my ears making them read those monstrosities They weren t exactly bad stories But they stemmed from emotions feelings that were doing no one any good In short, it was entitled dross I wouldn t exactly call the stories from this book entitled dross, but the anger in them, the subtle judgement that I feel from between the lines, isn t my cup of tea either The writer describes them as tales of humans being humans and failing to do so another weird turn of grammar , but call me an idealist if you will, but humans are better than this I can t put my finger on exactly why, because heaven knows I ve read books with unpleasant characters before I m also in the middle of reading Otsuichi s Goth so it s not like I m not prepared for any of this , but a lot of things about the characters and the stories rub me the wrong way Not my cup of tea, like I said But a good enough way to spend a couple hours over the weekend. Since this book is my first English book, I m quite tigilan na nga ito, mag Filipino na lang Dahil nga ito ang kauna unahan kong aklat na Ingles na mga sanaysay, parang isang sugal ang pagbili ko dito Nakabasa na rin ako ng mga Ingles na aklat pero kailangan ko at kahit ang mga nakatatanda ng diksyunaryo upang manamnam ng tama ang bawat salita Nakatutuwa dahil dahil sa aklat na ito, hindi na ako matatakot na magbasa ng English works ng mga Pinoy Authors Magaling, G Arguelles Sa aklat While I m reading Filipino na lang ulit Ayos Walong lugar ang napuntahan ko Maraming tauhan ngunit hindi ito balakid upang magulo ang pagkakasalaysay ng kuwento Magaan ang paggamit ng mga salita Isa na ito sa mga paborito kong aklat Sa awtor I am looking forward for your future works, Sir Agad agad at walang ano ano, bibilhin ko agad P dayon Poorly written It surprises me when it switches between Filipino English and American English The writing is not consistent with the personalities and backgrounds of the characters And there are so many many many similes and random metaphors.
